“There is a document requiring your authorisation before tomorrow’s ownership meeting.”
Kevin looked up.
“What ownership meeting?”
Thomas placed a heavy folder beside my plate.
Across the cover were the words:
Meridian Crest Group
Owner Authorisation
The table went silent.
“The east-wing renovation requires your signature before contractors begin next week,” Thomas explained.
I opened the folder.
“Of course.”
Kevin stared at me.
“What is that?”
Thomas answered calmly.
“Ms Mara Sutton is the sole owner of Crestwater Ridge Resort.”
Aunt Linda dropped her fork.
Davina gave a short, disbelieving laugh.
Thomas continued.
“She acquired the property over two years ago through Meridian Crest Group, which also owns four additional hospitality properties throughout the Southeast.”
My mother stared at me.
“That’s impossible.”
“Why?”
“You never told us.”
“You never asked.”
Kevin’s face slowly lost its colour.
“You own this entire resort?”
“Yes.”
“The building?”
“Yes.”
“The land?”
“Yes.”
“The company?”
“Yes.”
He leaned back in stunned silence.
“But your little real estate thing…”
“I suppose it grew.”
Janelle, Kevin’s wife, turned away to hide a laugh.
At that moment, Marcus, one of the senior servers, approached Thomas.
“Excuse me, Ms Sutton. The bridal family has arrived. Would you still like to welcome them personally tomorrow morning?”
“I would.”
“And Mr Whitfield would like to review the expansion budget after breakfast.”
“That’s fine.”
“Of course, ma’am.”
He walked away.
Every person at the table watched him.
When they turned back, no one looked at me the same way.
My mother spoke quietly.
“Everyone here knows who you are.”
“They know their employer.”
The word landed heavily.
Employer.
Not guest.
Not an outsider fortunate enough to be included.
The woman in the simple beige dress owned everything around them.
Kevin rubbed his face.
“When the valet welcomed us…”
“He was doing his job.”
“When Mom made the reservation…”
“The reservations staff handled it.”
“When we praised the service…”
“I’ll pass the compliments to the team.”
