Ryan’s eyes filled with tears.
“I know.”
“You told another woman that our marriage was falling apart while we were actively trying to become parents?”
“I didn’t say we were finished.”
Natalie pulled out her phone.
“Don’t lie again.”
Emily held out her hand.
Ryan stepped toward her.
“Emily, don’t.”
She stared at him.
“Why are you more afraid of me seeing those messages than you are of what you did?”
He had no answer.
Natalie gave Emily the phone.
The messages confirmed what Beth had said.
Beth had ended contact when she learned Emily was pregnant.
Ryan had told Beth he wasn’t sure his marriage would survive.
Yet at home, he had been building a crib.
He had gone to doctor appointments.
He discussed baby names.
He helped plan the gender reveal.
Emily finally handed the phone back.
“Did you sleep with her?”
Ryan looked directly at her.
“No.”
Natalie didn’t contradict him.
Neither did the messages.
That mattered.
But it didn’t erase everything else.
Emily nodded slowly.
“So you didn’t sleep with her.”
“No.”
“You only lied about a work trip, spent a weekend with your former fiancée, hid the fact that your wife was pregnant, told her our marriage might fail, and saw her again afterward.”
Ryan’s shoulders dropped.
“When you say it like that…”
Emily stared at him.
“How else should I say it?”
He went silent.
One question still bothered me.
“Why the cake?” I asked Natalie.
She looked ashamed.
“I tried to contact Emily twice.”
Emily looked at her.
“What?”
Natalie explained.
The first time, she sent Emily a message asking to meet privately.
Ryan saw it on Emily’s tablet, which was connected to her phone.
He deleted it.
The second time, Natalie sent her a photograph of the ring.
Ryan deleted that message too.
“I found out yesterday,” Natalie said. “He finally admitted what he’d done.”
Emily stared at Ryan.
“You were reading and deleting my messages?”
“I panicked.”
