Eventually, I reached a breaking point and scheduled an appointment with Dr. Lewis.
Sitting in her office, I felt both anxious and hopeful. After months of changing my behavior around Jacob’s complaints, I needed a professional opinion.
I described everything.
I explained the extra showers, the products, the constant anxiety, and Jacob’s repeated claim that I had an odor problem.
As I spoke, Dr. Lewis’s expression shifted from professional concern to genuine confusion.
“Sophie, I can’t detect any odor,” she stated frankly.
Her words should have reassured me.
Instead, they made me cry.
I had become so dependent on Jacob’s version of reality that even a doctor’s confirmation was difficult to accept.
Desperate for certainty, I asked her to run tests.
I wanted to know whether there was a hidden medical condition causing something I could not detect.
Dr. Lewis agreed.
The tests covered several possibilities, including hormonal issues, metabolic disorders, and other conditions that might affect body odor.
Waiting for the results was miserable.
Part of me hoped something would be found because at least then Jacob’s claims would make sense.
Another part feared that something was seriously wrong with me.
When the results came back, they were clear.
I was completely healthy.
There was no medical reason for an odor.
The news brought relief, but it also created a more disturbing question.
If there was nothing physically wrong with me, why had Jacob insisted there was?
Was it a problem with his perception?
Or was there something more deliberate behind his behavior?
Dr. Lewis’s office became the place where I first seriously considered that the issue might never have been mine.
That realization shifted something inside me.
For the first time, I began moving away from self-blame and toward suspicion.
Not long after that appointment, Jacob suggested that I meet his parents.
“We should have dinner with my parents,” Jacob said one evening.
He sounded casual, but I could hear anticipation in his voice.
Normally, meeting a partner’s family would have been exciting, even if slightly intimidating. But after everything that had happened, the invitation filled me with anxiety.
Jacob seemed unaware of how deeply his comments had affected me.
He spoke about the dinner as though it were a positive step forward.
“They’re really looking forward to meeting you,” he assured me.
His reassurance did little to calm me.
I kept wondering what he had already told them about me.
The dinner took place at Jacob’s childhood home.
He had always described it fondly, and when we arrived, I could see why. The house was warm, traditional, and filled with signs of long family history.
As we approached the front door, Jacob changed.
His usual confidence faded, replaced by the nervous eagerness of a son trying to please his parents.
His mother, Nancy, greeted us politely.
