Madison grinned.
“The hallway video.”
My stomach dropped.
Brielle looked horrified.
“You didn’t.”
“Oh, come on,” Madison laughed. “The Evangeline video. That thing was hilarious.”
The table went quiet.
Ashley stared into her drink.
Madison continued anyway.
“She was basically our class mascot for awkward.”
I felt something cold settle inside me.
Not anger.
Not embarrassment.
Clarity.
“What was she like?” I asked.
Madison lit up immediately.
“Oh, tragic. Braces. Frizzy hair. Always nervous. You barely had to say anything and she’d panic.”
Ashley shifted in her chair.
“We were awful.”
Madison rolled her eyes.
“It was high school.”
“No,” I said quietly. “Not everybody experienced it the same way.”
She narrowed her eyes.
“Did you know her?”
“Better than you did.”
Then I excused myself and went to the restroom.
Inside, I locked myself in a stall and finally let my hands shake.
I called Mom.
