“This girl is blackmailing Adrian,” she declared. “You will hand over the recording and apologize.”
Adrian placed my engagement ring onto the conference table. He must have discovered the matching insurance paperwork and believed sentiment would weaken my resolve.
“You’re confused,” he said quietly. “Rosa tempted me. She’s after money. We can still get married if you choose to act reasonably.”
I almost respected the size of his arrogance.
“Did you report her supposed theft?” I asked.
His attorney answered first. “Not yet.”
“Did you officially terminate her employment in writing?”
Silence.
“Did you preserve her personnel records, payroll documents, and the household security footage?”
The attorney’s expression shifted.
Adrian leaned across the table. “Why is any of that important?”
“Because destroying evidence after receiving notice of a legal claim is known as spoliation.”
I pushed three envelopes toward them: a preservation notice, a workplace harassment complaint, and a representation letter signed by Rosa.
Celeste laughed. “Your little nonprofit doesn’t frighten us.”
“My little nonprofit isn’t representing her.”
I opened the conference room door. Marcus Bell, my former law partner, walked inside with two attorneys from his firm.
Adrian’s face immediately lost its color.
Marcus oversaw the independent ethics review connected to Adrian’s merger. Even more importantly, Adrian’s employment agreement included a morality and disclosure clause. Any concealed relationship with a subordinate, retaliation, or dishonesty during due diligence could invalidate both his promotion and his stock award.
Marcus laid a letter in front of him. “The board has initiated an investigation.”
Adrian’s confidence finally shattered. “Evelyn is doing this because I broke off our engagement.”
I smiled. “The lobby cameras recorded you arriving with my ring. You’ll need a better lie.”
He jumped to his feet so abruptly that his chair crashed onto the floor.
