As soon as the car drove away, I grabbed the tablet. We use it to see our location — it’s mostly for security.

Glancing out the window, I saw them. Dan was sitting upright, Ruby was swinging her legs on a blue couch. And Molly was kneeling in front of Ruby, holding a stuffed reindeer and smiling warmly.

Dan looked up.
“Erica”, he said, getting up. “What are you doing? “
“What am I doing here? Who is she? Why does my daughter draw pictures of your “friend” as if she were part of our family? “
