The answer surprised me. It was a hammerhead worm—a type of terrestrial flatworm named for its distinctive head shape. Unlike common earthworms, which help improve soil by breaking down organic matter, hammerhead worms are predators. They feed on earthworms and other small invertebrates found in moist environments. What I initially thought was harmless turned out to be something entirely different.
I also learned that it’s best to avoid direct contact with these creatures. Some species produce defensive chemicals that help them capture prey, and handling unfamiliar wildlife is never a good idea. While there’s no need to panic upon seeing one, it’s wise to keep children and pets away until the animal is properly identified.
