My five-year-old has a habit of naming everything—her stuffed bunny is Gerald, her blanket is Princess Cloud, and apparently, the man who visited her bedroom window at night was “Mr. Hal.”
The problem?
I didn’t know anyone named Hal.
So I set up a camera.
And what I saw made my blood run cold.
It all started in the most ordinary way.
A quiet Wednesday morning. Breakfast. Routine.
Romy was eating cereal, completely focused, when she casually said,
“Mr. Hal says you work too hard, Mommy.”
I froze.
“Who is Mr. Hal?”
“He watches me. Keeps me safe.”
She said it like it was the most normal thing in the world.
I brushed it off. Imaginary friend. Kids do that.
That was my first mistake.
The Question That Changed Everything
A week later, while brushing her hair before bed, she looked at me through the mirror.
“Mom… why does Mr. Hal only come when you’re sleeping?”
My hand stopped mid-motion.
“What do you mean?”
“He comes at night,” she said calmly. “He looks through the window… then talks to me. But he says not to wake you.”
My entire body went cold.
“What does he look like?”
She thought for a moment.
“He’s old. Smells weird… like a garage. And he walks really slow.”
That night—I didn’t sleep.
The Sound at 1:13 AM
After checking every door and window twice, I sat in the dark, trying to convince myself it was nothing.
Then—
A sound.
Soft.
A single tap on glass.
I froze.
By the time I reached her room, everything was still.
But the curtain was moving.
And there was no wind.
