At first glance, this picture looks like a simple little counting game. You see colorful produce arranged in rows, and the question seems easy: How many fruits can you find?

But there is a small catch.
Not everything in the picture that looks like a fruit is actually classified as a fruit in botanical terms. Some foods we commonly call vegetables are technically fruits because of the way they develop from a flower. So before you give your final answer, take a closer look at every item and think about what it really is.
Let’s go through them one by one.
Start with the strawberry. Most people immediately count it as a fruit, and in everyday language, that makes perfect sense. However, botanically speaking, the strawberry is an unusual case. The red fleshy part is not technically the fruit itself. The tiny yellow “seeds” on the outside are actually individual fruits called achenes. For a simple picture quiz like this, though, strawberries are normally counted as fruits.
Next, we have grapes. These are definitely fruits. Each grape develops from a flower and contains seeds, although many grapes sold today are seedless varieties.
Then there is the green bell pepper. This is where the quiz gets more interesting. Bell peppers are commonly treated as vegetables when we cook, but botanically, they are fruits. They develop from the flower of the pepper plant and contain seeds.
The same idea applies to the apple. An apple is a true botanical fruit because it develops from the flower of the apple tree. It is also one of the easiest items in the picture to identify as a fruit.
