At first glance, this looks like a very easy counting puzzle. You can quickly spot an orange, an apple, and a strawberry, so you might think the answer is only three. But then you notice the tomato, the green pepper, and the eggplant. Wait a minute—are those fruits too?
That is where this little picture gets tricky.
The puzzle is not really testing how quickly you can count. It is testing whether you know the difference between how we use foods in everyday life and how scientists classify them. So before you choose your answer, take a closer look at every item in the picture.
Let’s go through them one by one.
First, we have the orange. This one is probably the easiest. We normally call an orange a fruit, and botanically, it is a fruit too. It develops from the flower of the orange tree and contains seeds. So there is no trick here. The orange definitely counts.
Next is the apple. An apple is also a fruit. It grows from a flower and develops around the seeds of the apple tree. Interestingly, apples are considered accessory fruits because some of the edible part develops from tissue around the flower, not just the ovary. But for this puzzle, it is clearly a fruit.
