His Wife Took His Card and Gave Him Just 20 DLR … Until He Opened Her Secret Envelope

There was roasted chicken, elbow macaroni soup, warm tortillas, apple soda, and even a small flan.

Maribel wore a simple red dress, the same one she wore when they were still dating and walking hand in hand along the Alameda.

“Happy anniversary, Martin,” she said, smiling nervously.

He didn’t smile.

—And what money did you use to buy this?

Maribel was frozen.

Before he could answer, his cell phone vibrated on the table.

Martin managed to read the message.

“Mrs. Maribel, we’ll sign tomorrow. Bring the final payment. —Ernesto.”

Martin’s face hardened.

“Ernesto?” she asked, her voice cracking with anger. “Who the hell is Ernesto?”

Maribel paled.

—Martin, wait…

But he had already taken the cell phone.

—Five years taking my money to give it to some other bastard!

Maribel opened a drawer, took out a thick yellow envelope and placed it in front of him with trembling hands.

—Before saying anything else, open this.

Martin looked at the envelope as if it were a bomb.

And when he tore the flap, he felt the air catch in his chest.

PART 2

There were no love letters inside the envelope.

There were no photos.

There was no evidence of betrayal.

There were notary documents.

Martin pulled out the first sheet of paper with tense hands, still breathing like a caged bull.

He read the headline.

“Purchase and Sale Agreement.”

Then he saw his name.

Martín Hernández López.

And next to it, hers.

Maribel Cruz Hernández.

Then he read the address.

A plot of land measuring 120 square meters in Tecámac, State of Mexico.

Martin blinked.

He read it again.

The leaf seemed to mock his anger.

“What is this?” he murmured.

Maribel wiped away a tear with the back of her hand.
