About a month after the separation, Clara received an unexpected phone call.
It was from a law firm she didn’t recognize.
At first, she assumed it was a mistake.
But the caller insisted that her presence was required for a reading related to Daniel’s uncle’s estate.
Confused, Clara almost declined. She had no interest in anything connected to Daniel anymore.
But something in the lawyer’s tone made her pause.
“This concerns you directly,” he said.
Reluctantly, she agreed to attend.
The Final Clause
The law office was quiet and imposing, filled with polished wood and heavy silence.
Daniel was already there when Clara arrived. He looked surprised—almost uneasy—to see her.
“What are you doing here?” he asked.
“I was invited,” Clara replied calmly.
The lawyer entered the room, carrying a thick folder.
After a brief introduction, he began to speak.
“As you both know, the estate of Mr. Harold Whitmore has largely been transferred to Daniel,” he said.
Daniel nodded, his confidence returning.
“However,” the lawyer continued, “there is a final clause that must be addressed.”
The room seemed to hold its breath.
“This clause pertains specifically to the condition under which the inheritance is to be fully retained.”
Daniel frowned. “What does that mean?”
The lawyer adjusted his glasses and read aloud:
“To my nephew, Daniel: you shall inherit my estate in full, provided you remain married to your current spouse, Clara, for a minimum of five years following my passing. Should you initiate or finalize a divorce within that period, the entirety of the estate will be revoked and transferred to Clara.”
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Daniel’s face drained of color.
Clara felt as though the ground had shifted beneath her feet.
The Tables Turn
“What… what does that mean?” Daniel stammered.
“It means,” the lawyer said evenly, “that due to your initiation of divorce proceedings, the condition has been violated.”
Daniel shook his head. “No, no—this must be some kind of mistake.”
“It is not,” the lawyer replied. “The clause is legally binding.”
Clara sat frozen, trying to process what she had just heard.
The fortune Daniel had inherited—the fortune he had chosen over their marriage—was no longer his.
It was hers.
