The older officer held a printed complaint.
The first line said my father had accused me of stealing the $12,000 meant to save my mother’s life.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
The porch light hummed.
Somewhere down the street, a dog barked once and went quiet.
The younger officer looked at my hospital wristband, then at the pill bottles on the side table, then back at the complaint.
“Ma’am,” the older officer said, “your father says he gave you access to family medical funds and that you refused to release them.”
Ethan let out a bitter laugh, but it had no humor in it.
“She was unconscious,” he said. “She was in the hospital for weeks.”
The officer’s eyes shifted.
I asked to see the complaint.
He hesitated, then turned the page toward me.
My father’s signature was at the bottom in blue ink.
He had written that I interfered with emergency care.
He had written that I withheld funds.
