I wanted to believe him, but embarrassment still burned beneath my skin.
Evan’s empty chair felt impossible to ignore.
Patricia leaned closer.
“Do you want to continue dinner, or would you rather leave?”
A year earlier, I would have left.
I would have gone home, cried in the shower, and invented excuses for Evan.
He was tired.
He felt uncomfortable.
He did not understand corporate events.
But he did understand.
He understood enough to choose the cruelest possible words at the worst possible moment.
“I want to stay,” I said.
So I stayed.
Richard resumed his toast, but this time he spoke with greater purpose.
He described my work in detail.
He mentioned the emergency supplier contract I had negotiated at midnight.
He spoke about the warehouse employees I protected after a failed automation rollout.
He described the client who threatened to leave until I flew to Dallas and solved the problem over one weekend.
As he spoke, I realized Evan had never asked about any of it.
He knew I worked late.
He knew I came home exhausted.
He knew I occasionally fell asleep with my laptop open.
But he had never cared enough to understand what those hours meant.
After dinner, Patricia walked beside me toward the parking garage.
“I’m going to say something as your boss and as a woman who married the wrong man at twenty-eight,” she said. “A partner who cannot celebrate you will eventually punish you for growing.”
I swallowed.
“I think he already has.”
She nodded.
“Then do not make tonight smaller than it is.”
When I arrived home, Evan was sitting on my couch with his shoes on, eating cereal directly from the box.
He did not appear guilty.
He looked irritated.
“So you went back?” he asked.
“Yes.”
He laughed.
