He took jobs outside the entertainment industry, including installing satellite equipment and working aboard a cruise ship. Although these jobs were very different from acting, they gave him an opportunity to regain confidence, earn money, and begin creating stability again.
During this difficult chapter, someone from his past unexpectedly became an important source of encouragement. Winnie Hung, a longtime fan who had written to Aames when she was a teenager, had continued checking on him throughout the years. Her messages offered support when he was struggling.
Eventually, Aames and Hung met in Vancouver, and their connection developed into a relationship. They eventually married, while Aames slowly found his way back toward acting and a more stable life.
