But not the one they had imagined.
I wrapped a small silver box with a ribbon in Sabrina’s favorite color. Inside was a small, shiny, childlike, colorful toy car. Underneath, I slipped in a note: “This is what it feels like to have it all when you can hold it in your hands.”
I then took steps to protect myself.
My friend Marcus worked for a security company that installed dashcams. When he heard about the threats against my parents, he offered to lend them a training sedan equipped with dashcams and backup cameras.
“If they do something wrong,” he said, “you’ll want proof.”
My real car remained safely parked at a neighbor’s house. The training sedan sat in our driveway, under the porch light, looking completely ordinary.
That evening, at Sabrina’s birthday dinner, my parents showed her a theatrical display of affection. After the cake, my mother applauded softly.
“Hannah has a surprise,” she announced. All eyes turned to me. I placed the silver box in front of my sister.
“Happy Birthday.”
Sabrina eagerly opened it. The toy car glittered in her hand. She read the note, and her smile vanished.
My father jumped up so fast that his chair creaked on the floor. “You little insolent…”
“It’s a car,” I said calmly. “Exactly what you asked for.”
My mother’s voice turned icy. “When we get home, it’s over for you.”
When we arrived home, they didn’t even set foot inside.
My father took a wheel wrench from the garage. My mother took a hammer. Without hesitation, they headed straight for the sedan.
