After searching his top drawer, I found a small spare key.
The lock opened.
I expected financial records.
Maybe private business documents.
For one brief second, I even wondered whether I was about to discover evidence of an affair.
Instead, I found something I could never have imagined.
The box was filled with thick cream-colored envelopes.
Dozens of them.
They had been arranged carefully by year.
My hands began to shake as I opened the most recent one.
Inside was a formal invitation to the Vance family’s annual summer gathering at their beach estate in Hilton Head.
Then I saw handwriting on the back.
It belonged to my mother-in-law, Eleanor.
“Dear Sloan, Lily, and Leo,
Please say you’ll join us this year. The house feels empty without our youngest grandchildren. We understand that you’ve wanted distance, Sloan, but it has been far too long since we’ve seen all of you.”
I stopped breathing.
Distance?
I opened another envelope.
Then another.
Then another.
Eleven years of invitations.
Eleven years of letters asking us to come.
Eleven years of notes saying how much Eleanor missed Lily and Leo.
And every single one had been hidden.
Suddenly, everything changed.
Julian had been lying to both sides.
To me, he claimed his family didn’t want spouses or children at the annual gathering.
To them, he had apparently claimed that I refused to attend and wouldn’t allow them to see the kids.
He had made us believe we were unwanted.
And he had made them believe I was deliberately keeping the children away.
I stared at the pile of letters.
Then I thought about Lily’s faded pink shovel sitting in the back of her closet.
For eleven years, my daughter had believed her grandparents didn’t want her.
And Julian had known the truth the entire time.
I didn’t scream.
I didn’t throw anything.
Something inside me simply became very still.
I called my attorney, Darcy.
Within two hours, she was sitting in Julian’s study with a scanner and an assistant.
We copied every envelope.
Every letter.
