Aging doesn’t have to be associated solely with loss of function or dependence. Various longevity studies agree that there are clear signs indicating whether a person over 65 is aging healthily, independently, and with vitality. Identifying these signs allows us not only to celebrate what we have retained, but also to reinforce the habits that sustain long-term well-being. Below, we review eight abilities that specialists consider positive indicators of healthy aging, along with recommendations for keeping them active in daily life. 1. Walk without assistance and with good balance The ability to move independently is one of the clearest signs of vitality. Walking with a steady gait, maintaining balance when rising from a chair, or navigating obstacles in the street reflects good muscular, joint, and neurological health. A stable gait also reduces the risk of falls, a leading cause of complications in old age. To maintain it, it is recommended to walk at least 30 minutes a day and perform gentle balance exercises, such as standing on one foot with close support. 2. Go up and down stairs without difficulty This everyday activity requires leg strength, cardiovascular endurance, and coordination. Those who can climb a full flight of stairs without becoming too winded tend to have better indicators of heart and muscle health. Adapted strength training, such as gentle squats or the use of resistance bands, helps to preserve this ability for longer.
3. Maintain a working memory
Remembering names, dates, recent conversations, or where you left your keys is a sign that your working memory is still active. It’s not about having a perfect memory—occasional forgetfulness is normal—but about maintaining the ability to learn new things and function in everyday life.
Reading, playing cards, solving crossword puzzles, learning languages, or using new technologies are activities that stimulate brain plasticity.
