The scene before her was a man, gravely wounded, lying in a pool of blood on the sidewalk, death on his heels. Her instinct screamed at her to flee. Instead, she made a choice that would change their lives forever.
What began as an act of compassion on a stormy night quickly uncovered a shocking truth buried deep in the past: a devastating lie that ruined innocent lives, destroyed families, and drove powerful people down a path of betrayal and revenge.
As long-hidden secrets resurface, the wounded crime boss, the struggling single mother, and the little boy in the golden boots find themselves bound by a destiny none of them could have imagined.
And when the truth finally comes out, nothing and no one will ever be the same again. 👇👇👇 The woman closed her eyes for a moment. Roman saw the impossible choice before her. She was neither rich nor well-protected, and she had a son to protect.
“What’s your name?” she asked.
“Roman.”
“Roman what?”
He hesitated.
“If you want me to risk my son’s life, don’t lie to me.”
“Marcelli.”
She stepped back. Even outside her circle, that name was well-known.
“No. Absolutely not.”
Roman nodded. “Good answer.”
Beside her, Noah let out a small cry.
Noah pointed at Roman. “He begged God not to let him die in a dumpster.”
Pity crossed her face.
After a long moment, she sighed. “I live above the bakery. One floor up. If you make a single mistake near my son, no matter who you are, I’ll let you bleed.”
For the first time that evening, Roman almost smiled.
“Okay.”
She turned to her son. “Noah, go upstairs. Open the door to apartment number two, put some towels on the kitchen floor, and don’t come back down.”
When the boy ran off, she approached Roman.
“My name is Mara Keene. I’m an ER nurse. I can probably keep you alive for an hour or two.”
Roman tried to stand and almost collapsed.
Mara grabbed his good arm.
“My God, you’re heavy!”
“Muscles,” he muttered.
“Bad decisions,” she retorted. “Move.”
Together, they climbed the stairs to the small apartment above the bakery—the only place resembling a refuge Roman had seen all night.
“Mom, please. He said not here.”
