She leaned in again, so close I could smell the sharp scent of her perfume, and hissed,
“Be quiet—or you’ll end up with them.”
Gasps erupted among the mourners. My knees gave out, and I collapsed to the floor, shaking, blood running down my brow. Álvaro didn’t step forward. He didn’t speak. He simply stared, paralyzed, as though unable—or unwilling—to choose a side.
That was when a steady voice cut through the chaos from the back of the church. A voice no one expected… and one that would alter everything.
“That’s enough!”
The words rang out with authority.
Every head turned. It was Isabel—Álvaro’s older sister—a woman known for her restraint, someone who had always kept her distance from family confrontations. She walked quickly down the aisle, her face pale, her eyes blazing with contained fury. She positioned herself between Carmen and me, standing firm like a barrier.
“Mom,” she said, her voice shaking yet unwavering, “you crossed a line that can never be undone. And this didn’t start today.”
Carmen opened her mouth to respond, but Isabel raised her hand and stopped her. She pulled out her phone and pressed play without hesitation. The church filled with a recorded voice—Carmen’s. Weeks earlier, she could be heard dismissing my pregnancy symptoms, claiming I was “overreacting,” insisting I didn’t need rest, saying that “a little effort never hurt anyone.” In that moment, I remembered how I had kept working, lifting heavy things, ignoring doctors’ warnings—because she had demanded it.
Isabel lifted her gaze and continued,
“I also have messages where you pressured Lucía not to go to the hospital the night she started bleeding.”
A wave of shock rippled through the room. Álvaro finally moved. He clutched his head with both hands, shaking as if reality had struck him all at once. Carmen’s face drained of color—yet she still tried to deny it, claiming everything was fabricated.
But the silence that followed told a different story.
