Silence.
My trust.
That was Ethan’s real problem.
My late father had left me controlling shares in a private investment company worth far more than Ethan ever realized. Under our prenuptial agreement, I had deliberately kept those assets separate.
Ethan discovered their value six months earlier.
Soon after, he became obsessed with getting my signature on a new financial authorization.
I refused.
That was when I began examining his company.
The missing $2.8 million led to shell corporations.
Those led to Nolan.
And Nolan led directly to Diane, who had quietly received hundreds of thousands in “consulting fees.”
They weren’t simply targeting my money.
They were stealing from investors and needed access to my assets to cover the hole before an audit exposed them.
When I refused, the crash became their solution.
For two days, I pretended I knew none of it.
Ethan even visited once with his attorney.
This time, he remained out of reach.
“You’re destroying yourself,” he said.
I looked small beneath the blankets.
That helped.
“Maybe I should sign.”
His eyes brightened.
There it was.
Greed.
“Smartest thing you’ve said in years.”
I lowered my gaze.
“I want everyone present. Your mother. Nolan. Your attorney. Mine. I don’t want anyone claiming later that I was pressured.”
Ethan smirked.
“Fine.”
He believed he was bringing witnesses to my surrender.
I was bringing witnesses to his confession.
Because while Ethan had spent years mocking my intelligence, my attorney had already delivered my forensic report to federal investigators.
And the hospital meeting room arranged for us?
Detective Reed would be watching from the next room.
Ethan arrived in a charcoal suit as if he were attending a business closing instead of negotiating with the wife he had attacked beside a heart monitor.
Diane carried champagne.
Nolan came smiling.
My attorney, Rachel Kim, sat beside me.
Ethan dropped a pen onto the table.
“Let’s finish this.”
I looked at Diane’s bottle.
“Celebrating early?”
She smiled.
“Celebrating common sense.”
Rachel slid the agreement toward me.
I touched the pen but didn’t sign.
“Before I do, I want Ethan to explain something.”
His smile tightened.
“What?”
“The brake line.”
Nobody moved.
Nolan glanced at Ethan.
That tiny movement was enough.
Ethan scoffed.
“The accident again?”
“The police found a hydraulic line that had been deliberately cut.”
Diane slowly lowered the champagne bottle.
Ethan leaned toward me.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
I turned to Nolan.
“The garage camera does.”
His face went blank.
Ethan snapped toward him.
“You said that camera was dead.”
Silence crashed through the room.
Rachel didn’t blink.
Neither did I.
Ethan realized his mistake instantly.
Too late.
I whispered, “Thank you.”
He stood.
“For what?”
“For confirming you knew about the camera.”
The door opened.
Detective Reed entered with two officers.
Ethan stepped backward.
“This is ridiculous.”
Reed faced Nolan.
“We also have footage of you underneath Mrs. Hayes’s vehicle.”
