A girl went to a police station to confess to a serious c.r.i.m.e, but what she said left the officer completely shocked.

The father seemed relieved. “Thank you. Honey, I’m the policeman. You can tell him now.”

The girl stared at the uniform intently, sobbing.
“Are you really a police officer?” she asked through her tears.

“Yes,” she smiled kindly. “See my uniform? That’s how you know.”

She nodded, breathed shakily, and whispered,
“I… I committed a crime.”

The officer kept his voice calm. “Okay. You can tell me. I’m listening.”

Her lip trembled. “Are you going to put me in jail?”

“It depends,” she said quietly. “What happened?”

She burst into tears, and the words came out between sobs.

I hit my brother really hard in the leg. Now he has a bruise. And he’s going to die. I didn’t mean to. Please don’t put me in jail…

For a brief moment, the officer froze, then his expression softened. He embraced her tenderly.

“Oh no, honey,” she said to reassure her. “Your brother will be fine. Nobody dies from a bruise.”

She looked at him, her eyes wide and moist.
“Really?”

“Seriously,” he nodded. “But we don’t hit people, okay?”

“I won’t do it,” she sobbed.

“Do you promise?”

“I promise.”

The little girl dried her tears, snuggled into her mother’s arms, and for the first time in days, stopped crying. Peace returned to the station, along with a few quiet smiles from those who had witnessed the smallest and most heartfelt confession of the day.
