Months earlier, while receiving treatment, Mike had met another child who was having a difficult time. Wanting to help, Mike used crayons and paper to create a pretend boarding pass.
He told the child they were going somewhere special.
That small act of kindness became a tradition.
Other children at the hospital began receiving their own “boarding passes” before difficult days. They imagined trips to beaches, castles, outer space, and places where they could forget their worries for a while.

The entire cabin applauded.
Slowly, passengers waved toward Mike.
He waved back with the same excitement he had shown the airport workers earlier.
For his parents, that moment changed the way they looked at their son’s journey.
They had spent so much time thinking about what illness had taken away.
But on that airplane, they saw what it could never take away.
Mike’s kindness.
His imagination.
And the way he made people feel hopeful.
