The Face on the Screen
For many years, I carried a quiet sense of loss that became part of my everyday life. It never truly disappeared, but with time, I learned how to move forward while holding onto the memories of my daughter, Emma. Then one evening, everything changed. As I browsed through an adoption website, a young girl’s face immediately caught my attention. I froze. The resemblance to Emma was striking—so much so that it stirred emotions I thought I had already processed. In that moment, a wave of questions surfaced, leaving me unable to simply scroll past and forget what I had seen.
After Emma’s passing, my husband Mark and I coped in very different ways. I found comfort in remembering, while he focused on work and avoided revisiting the past. Over time, that difference created distance between us, and conversations became fewer. Eventually, we began discussing adoption as a way to bring new purpose into our lives. But when I showed Mark the photo of the girl, his reaction was unexpectedly reserved. He didn’t share my curiosity or concern, which only made me feel more certain that I needed to look deeper into the situation myself.
Uncovering the Unspoken
My search led me to the adoption center connected to the listing. When I shared my concerns, the staff listened carefully, though their responses hinted at a more complicated background. They explained that there had been previous inquiries related to unusual similarities in certain cases connected to a specific medical facility. While nothing was confirmed, it was clear that there were unanswered questions surrounding how some children had entered the system. The information left me unsettled, but also determined to understand the truth behind what I had discovered.
