Warning signs of a heart attack?

Symptoms You Should Never Ignore

A heart attack can happen suddenly, but it does not always begin with dramatic chest pain. In some cases, the warning signs may be mild, unusual, or easy to mistake for indigestion, stress, fatigue, or another less serious problem. Recognising the symptoms early can make a critical difference.

A heart attack occurs when blood flow to part of the heart muscle becomes blocked. Without enough oxygen-rich blood, the affected heart tissue can begin to suffer damage. The longer the blockage continues, the greater the potential damage.

Knowing the warning signs—and acting quickly when they appear—is one of the most important things anyone can do for their own health or for someone around them.

What Is a Heart Attack?

A heart attack, medically known as a myocardial infarction, occurs when blood flow through one of the coronary arteries becomes significantly reduced or blocked. These arteries supply oxygen and nutrients to the heart muscle.

A blockage is often caused by a blood clot forming around a ruptured or damaged plaque inside an artery. When blood cannot reach the heart muscle normally, the tissue begins to lose oxygen.

A heart attack is a medical emergency. It is different from cardiac arrest, although the two conditions can sometimes occur together.

Cardiac arrest means the heart suddenly stops pumping effectively. A heart attack, on the other hand, is primarily a problem involving blood flow to the heart muscle.

1. Chest Pressure, Tightness, or Discomfort

One of the best-known warning signs is discomfort in the centre or left side of the chest.

People may describe it in different ways. It can feel like:

  • Pressure or squeezing
  • Tightness
  • Heaviness
  • Fullness
  • Burning
  • An uncomfortable sensation that does not go away

It does not always feel like severe pain. Some people experience only mild discomfort.

The sensation may last several minutes, disappear, and then return. Because symptoms can vary considerably, it is important not to dismiss unexplained chest discomfort simply because it is not extremely painful.

2. Pain That Spreads to Other Parts of the Body

Heart attack discomfort may extend beyond the chest.

Pain or unusual discomfort can spread to one or both arms, the shoulders, back, neck, jaw, or upper abdomen.

For some people, the chest discomfort is not the most noticeable symptom. Instead, they may experience unexplained discomfort in the arm, back, jaw, or upper body.

This is one reason heart attacks can sometimes be mistaken for muscle problems or other conditions.

If unexplained upper-body discomfort occurs together with other possible heart attack symptoms, urgent medical assessment is important.

3. Shortness of Breath

Difficulty breathing can occur with or without chest discomfort.

A person may suddenly feel unable to take a satisfying breath, become unusually winded, or feel as though they cannot get enough air.

Shortness of breath may appear while resting or during activity. It can also occur before other symptoms become obvious.

Because breathing difficulties can have many causes, they should not automatically be assumed to be a heart attack. However, sudden or unexplained shortness of breath—especially when accompanied by chest pressure, sweating, nausea, or weakness—requires urgent attention.

4. Unusual Sweating

Another possible warning sign is sudden sweating that does not have an obvious explanation.

A person may become unusually clammy or break into a cold sweat even though the environment is not hot and they have not been exercising.

Sweating by itself does not prove that someone is having a heart attack. But when it occurs together with chest discomfort, nausea, dizziness, or shortness of breath, it can be an important warning sign.

5. Nausea, Vomiting, or Indigestion-Like Symptoms

Some heart attacks cause digestive symptoms.

A person may experience nausea, vomiting, discomfort in the upper abdomen, or a sensation similar to severe indigestion.

This can be particularly confusing because people may assume they simply ate something that disagreed with them.
