Things You Should Absolutely Avoid Touching in Someone Else’s Home

Being a guest in someone else’s home comes with an important rule: respect their privacy and personal space. Even if you are close friends, not everything in their house is yours to explore. Accidentally discovering something private can create an uncomfortable situation for everyone.

Personal belongings, drawers, and cabinets should generally be left alone unless the homeowner gives you permission. If you need something, such as a glass or a cotton swab, simply ask. A small request is much better than accidentally discovering something that was never meant for you.

Medicine cabinets are especially private. Looking inside can reveal sensitive information about someone’s health and personal life. Unless your host specifically tells you to take something from the cabinet, it is better to ask them directly if you need medicine.

Valuables, collectibles, photographs, artwork, and sentimental decorations should also be admired without touching. Something that looks ordinary to you may have significant emotional or financial value to the homeowner. Keeping your hands off prevents accidental damage and awkward moments.
