A stroke can happen suddenly, but some people experience temporary neurological symptoms beforehand. These episodes may be caused by a **transient ischemic attack (TIA)**, sometimes called a “warning stroke.”
It is important to correct one common misconception: there is **no reliable rule that stroke symptoms will appear exactly one month before an attack**. Some people have no advance warning at all. Others may experience a TIA days or weeks beforehand. The American Stroke Association notes that TIAs occur before about 15% of strokes, and many subsequent cardiovascular events happen within days or weeks.
Any sudden stroke-like symptom should therefore be treated as an emergency—even if it disappears.
