PART 2
When I stood to walk toward the refreshment table, something stiff scraped against my left side.
I adjusted the gown and continued walking.
A few moments later, it happened again.
This time, the sensation was sharper, as though the corner of a tag had slipped through the inner lining.
I excused myself and walked into the quieter hallway outside the gym. When I pressed my hand against the fabric near my ribs, I felt something flat and rectangular hidden inside the bodice.
“What on earth?” I murmured.
I ran my fingers carefully along the inner seam. Several of the hand stitches had loosened as I moved, allowing the corner of a small paper envelope to push through.
I gently widened the opening and pulled it free.
My breath stopped before I even opened it.
I recognized Lila’s handwriting—the slanted letters, the round dots above every i, and the tiny stars she sometimes drew instead of periods.
On the front, she had written only 2 words.
For Grandma.
My hands shook so violently that I had to sit on a bench.
I opened the envelope and unfolded the letter inside.
