Photographer Jessica Blacklow was at Sydney’s Manly Beach in May 2023 when she noticed movement inside an approaching wave.

She started shooting—and captured something extraordinary: 12 dolphins riding the same wave together, lined up so perfectly that the photographs almost looked staged.

Blacklow, who lives in Newcastle, said dolphins normally move so quickly that she struggles to photograph them before they disappear behind a wave.

“I have never seen so many dolphins riding one wave together like that,” she said. “It must have been my lucky day.”

But why do dolphins surf?

Marine biologist David Lusseau says the behavior hasn’t been studied enough to give one definitive answer. Dolphins are highly social animals known to play—with one another and even with objects such as kelp—and surfing could sometimes be recreational. Waves may also provide practical advantages during travel, hunting or interactions with other dolphins.

Research into dolphin behavior shows that even familiar actions such as jumping can serve different purposes depending on the circumstances.
