For many people, strawberries are among the tastiest fruits available. They are sweet, juicy, and packed with vitamins. However, they have one major drawback: they often don’t stay fresh for very long. It happens regularly that you buy a fresh punnet, only to find soft or moldy specimens just a few days later.
That sometimes makes buying strawberries frustrating. Especially if you don’t eat them all right away. However, that problem lies not only with the fruit itself, but also with how we handle it. With a few simple solutions, you can actually keep them fresh for much longer.
To understand that, you first need to know why strawberries spoil so quickly. They contain a lot of moisture and sugars, which makes them an extra culprit for mold and bacteria. If moisture remains on the surface of the mass or if they are packed too closely together, things go wrong very quickly.
In addition, strawberries have a thin and fragile skin. They are easily damaged, for example, if they press against each other. Such damage causes it to be caused even faster. One bad strawberry can then affect the rest.
Ventilation also plays a major role. Strawberries continue to “breathe” after they have been picked. If you store them in a sealed container, a humid climate is created. That is exactly the environment in which mold thrives.
The tip from an experienced farmer tackles all these problems. The first step is surprising: do not wash your strawberries immediately. Many people do this automatically, but it actually introduces extra moisture. That accelerates the spoilage process.
It is better to wash them only just before you are going to eat them. This way they stay drier and therefore last longer. That small adjustment often makes a big difference.
